Chapter Twenty-Five

“Baby, I’m home. I caught an early flight.” A door slammed shut, jarring Shiloh from sleep. He flinched, jerking instinctively up, eyes wide and burning as his heart raced in his chest. Teddy grunted under him as Shiloh’s elbow caught his ribs.

Shiloh was on his feet without registering the movement, blinking owlishly at the man in the doorway. It was Ian, of course. He was Shiloh’s part-time boss at the club downstairs, so it wasn’t like they were strangers, but he’d never seen the larger man like this. He was in a dark suit, a briefcase in his left hand, but his right was on his hip like he was reaching for a gun, though he dropped it as soon as he recognized Shiloh.

“Oh, did I wake you?” Ian looked between him and Teddy on the couch, before glancing over at Gage, who now stood in front of the armchair. The two men locked eyes in what felt like a challenge. Shiloh imagined this was what it looked like when a lion faced down a cheetah in the wild.

“Da— Ian!” Teddy corrected his initial slip as he scrambled off the couch. Probably because of Gage, since Shiloh had known since high school what kind of relationship his best friend wanted.

“Hey, baby.” Ian dropped his briefcase to catch Teddy as he flung himself toward him. Shiloh, glad as he was that his friend was happy, couldn’t help the flare of jealousy in his chest that grew stronger at the sweet kiss Ian dropped on Teddy’s forehead.

“I should probably go anyway. I didn’t mean to fall asleep,” Shiloh said after several seconds.

Teddy broke away from his daddy with a flush. “You don’t have to leave. They don’t have to leave, right? They can stay the night?” Teddy looked up at Ian as he asked, his face hopeful, but Shiloh didn’t plan to stay. His friend deserved to spend some time with the man he loved without Shiloh getting in the way.

A glance at the ornate clock on the wall showed that it was only just after three in the morning, so maybe he could go home now. He doubted Lawson was still there, and even if he was, he’d likely be sleeping.

“No, I can’t stay anyway. You boys have fun.” Shiloh plastered on a wide grin and started for the door. “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” He blew Teddy a kiss, then glanced to make sure Gage was behind him before he left the apartment, ignoring Teddy’s protests.

They were quiet as they descended the stairs and went out into the alley. Gage cleared the car before they climbed in. Shiloh slumped into the passenger side, dropping his head back against the seat. “Can we go home now?”

“Sure.” Gage started the car and stated driving. The city was quiet, only the earliest of commuters silently picking their way through the dark street. “Your friend seems nice,” Gage said after several minutes of quiet.

“He’s the best,” Shiloh agreed. He leaned his head against the cool glass, streetlights blurring as they drove past.
